SunOpta Innovation Center

Located in our U.S. corporate offices in Edina, Minnesota, the new SunOpta Innovation Center is the cornerstone of our world-class Research and Development (R&D) department. Our 22 R&D staff members combine to bring nearly 250 years of industry experience and expertise in product ideation and development, cost savings and process improvement.

Our R&D professionals have experience developing a wide-range of products, including snack foods and beverages, and employing various techniques including spray drying, freezing, and aseptic processing. The SunOpta R&D team combined with the resources of our new Innovation Center provides a world-class product development experience for our customers.

Customer First Design

The SunOpta Innovation Center was designed to put customers first and involve them in every step of the product ideation and development process. We work with customers to understand their product development needs and convert those innovation insights into prototypes. The Innovation Center includes dedicated space for customer tastings and a secured entrance to protect proprietary customer innovations.

More Space. More Creativity.

Ten times larger than our previous R&D space, the SunOpta Innovation Center includes three work stations and a well-ventilated kitchen. Equipped with beverage mixing simulation equipment, homogenization equipment and small-batch processing equipment, the Innovation Center has the technical capabilities to design products that easily scale up to plant-manufacturing while managing costs and maintaining product quality.

State of the Art Equipment

Advanced analytical tools including pH, brix and water activity meters, centrifuge, and moisture analysis equipment allow us to specify products with improved effectiveness. A separate and well-ventilated kitchen ensures contaminants don't interfere with the development process, while giving our R&D team a dedicated space to employ various techniques to develop the perfect product.

Our Team

Our Research and Development team brings over 250 years of combined experience to the product development process. Our team includes two food engineers, a trained chef, and a trained dietician. We work with our customers to think like an end-consumer and design products that are relevant for today's rapidly evolving marketplace.
